Search for [let it snow] and Google will turn the search results page into a powdery snow covered set of search results.

The search results will become so hard to see that you would want to wipe the screen. Instead, use the mouse and it will wipe off the snow.

Don’t have any patience for that? No worries, click the “Defrost” button at the top and the snow will melt away.

Google Tests New Feature "Sources"

A new feature called "Sources" has been spotted on Google's search results pages. Whenever it will be rolled out to all users, may actually decrease click-through rates.

Cyrus Shepard noted on Google+ that Google was showing "Source" box when he searched for pop Singer Rihanna.

The information source box contain may have an adverse impact of click-throughs-rates. As it includes the Wikipedia information for the singer and list of some of her songs that may be all what a searcher is looking for. Therefore, the answers to their searches could be simply found on the search page itself.

Cross DomainURL selection – When search engine find matching/identical content pieces on differentURLs/websites, it runs an algorithm to select a primary URL among all otherurls and removes them from search results.

What doesthis mean?

Google is laying emphasis on its algorithmto identify the original and highest quality link for the content, and to devaluethe other URLs having same content, further removing them from the searchresults. The idea behind this is to cut down on duplicate search results and reducea lot of copy cat, scrapers, and other unethical content websites. Bydoing this user will be benefited getting better and diversified search results,not just 10 different URLs saying the same thing.

What did Googlesay about it?

There are numerous possible causesof cross-domain URL selection which may include:

detected duplicate content,
301 redirects,
Configuration mistakes

Incorrect canonicalization
Misconfigured servers

Malicious hacking
Unauthorized copying

Having the same content availableon more than one URL is an issue which is known as duplicate content. But when Google discovers a group of pages withduplicate content, it uses its algorithms to select one main URL for thatcontent. That group of pages may contain URLs from the same site or fromdifferent sites. When one URL is selectedfrom a group of different sites the selection is called a cross-domain URL selection.

Example

For example, if the group of URLscontains one URL from a.com and one URL from b.com having same content, andGoogle’s algorithm select the URL from b.com, then the domain a.com may nolonger be shown in the search results and may see a major drop in search traffic.

Messages in Google Webmaster Tools (GWT) (SEO perspective)

To inform the site owners about cross-domainURL selection happened, Google may send a message alert via GWT.

When GWT detects a cross-domainURL selection is affecting top pages of the website has occurred it may sendthe webmaster a message regarding it. However, when many URLs are affected bycross-domain URL selections, webmaster may not send any email or any messagefor the same URL multiple times.

These messages will be sent to thewebmasters who have verified the ownership of their website in GWT. Forreceiving messages it is recommended to activate email delivery of GWT messages.

Google Shutting Down its 4 Services

Google announced to shut down few of its products by January 15, 2012. These probably will include Google Buzz, Code Search, the University Research Program for Google Search, iGoogle social features, Jaiku, and several APIs associated with these services.

Google Buzz - Buzz was introduced in February 2010 and garnered lots of attention in early days but failed to maintain long-term support. This is the least predictable shutdown going to happen in the next "few weeks."

Code Search - This is a platform to search public source code but both code search and its API will be closed for business on January 15th, 2012.

iGoogle social features - While iGoogle will continue as normal, all features that gave social capabilities will be closed in favor of Google+ on January 15th, 2012.

Jaiku - This social feature allows you to create your own microblog and connect with your friends, was acquired by Google in 2007 will be shut down on January 15th, 2012.

University Research Program for Google Search -This program gave university faculty & academic researchers high-volume programmatic access to Google Search. Google will discontinue this on January 15th, 2012.

In addition to the above, numerous other Google products have been shut down. Those include Google Labs, which saw official closure on October 14th, Boutiques.com and Like.com, both of which now redirect to Google Product Search.

Google Presents Circular Ads

Google is working on a new type of ad called ‘Circulars’. These ads will remind you of the promotional leaflet inserts that are usually found in magazines and newspapers.

Nick Fox, Vice President of product management at Google, says “[Retailers are] trying to understand what the answer is in the digital age to the offline print circular. They’re trying to understand how to get their online visitors into their stores. And this is our answer to that.”

These ads will act as pop-ups when a users clicks on search or display ads. The rules & regulations taken into consideration will be the relevancy to keywords and page quality. They will be available on almost all most platforms including desktops, laptops,tablets and mobiles.

As per Bloomberg's information, the new ad format will be available from today itself. Google has already started working with some biggies like Best Buy and Macy’s, to make these ads a success.

Google working to develop self-driven cars

As per Google one of the biggest problems we’re facing today is car safety and efficiency. They want to help out on few rising issues in today's world -

- prevent traffic accidents,

- free up people’s time,

- reduce carbon emissions...

Web search giant Google is reportedly working to develop technology for cars that drives without the intervention of humans.

It will use video cameras, radar sensors and a laser range finder to see upcoming traffic, as well as detailed maps to navigate the road ahead. Safety is our first priority and our cars are never unmanned, Google says in its official blog.

All in all, our self-driving cars have logged over 140,000 miles. Web search giant thinks development of self driven cars is a first achievement in robotics research.

They have always been so optimistic about technology’s ability to advance society, due to which they have worked so hard to improve the capabilities of self-driving cars which was unexpected few years ago.

This project is currently under experimental stage, it provides a glimpse of what transportation might look like in the future. All this had happened due to the advanced computer science technology.

Google Search by Voice Expanded

Google Search by Voice enables people to search the web faster than ever. It was originally launched in English and was offered in only 5 countries namely the U.S., UK, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Later it was introduced in Japanese and Mandarin to increase the number of possible users. A week ago, Google launched this service in 4 more languages French, Italian, German and Spanish. This week Google followed the launch with Korean and Traditional Mandarin of Taiwan.

To use Google Search by Voice, visit the Google mobile page in your country's domain (for example, in India go to m.google.co.in) and download the application for your phone’s operating system. You'll find this available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry phones.

Ultimately, Goal of Google Search by voice is to bring Google Voice to speakers of all languages.

Google TV About To Launch

Google has stretched its arms all over in media consumption, and now it’s the turn of your TV.

Google is trying to make its TV software presentable for this event & idea behind this is to make the market-ready to accept it.

Google n China Story

Google has decided to stop showing its results in China and it could even end up closing all its operations via shutting down its search engine & office there as well.

Google has now declared cyber attacks to its website are originating from China. Without accusing the Chinese government, Google said that in mid-December it became aware that cyber attacks from China had resulted in theft of intellectual property also that targeted the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists, Google said in its blog post.

Escalating cyber attacks on Google and other companies may be powerless to stop the online industrial espionage, alarm government officials in the U.S.

Google has threatened to pull out of China after a series of cyber attacks originating every here and there.

"The recent cyber intrusion that Google attributes to China is troubling and the U.S. government is looking into it," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said on Thursday.

According to a report, a meeting was held between top officials from Google Inc. and the honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri.Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, where the proposal to include Bengali classical literature and popular movies in Google's search was introduced.

Also, the same source stated that Google has offered a proposal to maintain mail accounts of all ministers and top state government officials of Bengal. Google even has a Bangla version for search. And now it is trying to promote Bengali literary works all over the world.
